About The Cultured Pour
The Cultured Pour explores spirits through taste, craft, and culture.
This site is a personal spirits journal built from years of tasting notes, conversations, events, and curiosity. It is not meant to be a formal scoring authority or a hype-driven bottle chase. It is a place to record what I have tasted, what I have learned, and how different spirits connect to history, place, production, and community.
My interest in spirits began with the complexity of what is in the glass: smoke, oak, grain, fruit, sweetness, heat, age, texture, and balance. Over time, that interest grew into something larger. Spirits are not just beverages. They are cultural artifacts. They carry stories of agriculture, trade, technology, ritual, memory, identity, and craftsmanship.
Before starting The Cultured Pour, I was part of a small business called Oak and Smoke, LLC, where my partner and I reviewed spirits, discussed spirits news, explored history, hosted introductory tastings, interviewed people in the industry, and participated in the distilling process ourselves. That business is no longer active, but the passion behind it never went away.
I also hold a Bourbon Steward Certificate from the Stave and Thief Society, and my background in anthropology and archaeology shapes the way I think about spirits. I am interested not only in how something tastes, but why it tastes that way, where it comes from, who made it, and what role it plays in culture.
At The Cultured Pour, reviews are personal and honest. A rating reflects how a spirit worked for my palate, not a claim that everyone should agree. A bottle might earn a high score because it is complex and rare, or because it is simply the perfect everyday pour. Some spirits are special occasion bottles. Some are conversation pieces. Some are excellent values. Some are experiments that miss the mark.
The goal is to build a thoughtful record of spirits through:
- Bottle reviews and tasting notes
- Personal ratings and palate tracking
- Commentary on spirits news and community impact
- Cultural and historical context
- Visitor questions and discussion
- Practical recommendations for curious drinkers
The Cultured Pour is for people who enjoy spirits, but also want to understand them. It is for the person who wants to know what is in the glass, how it got there, and what story it carries.
Every pour has a story. This is where I keep mine.
